Is the Metaverse Dead? What 2025’s NFT Sales Numbers Actually Say
“The metaverse is dead” has been a safe headline since 2022. The on-chain data tells a more interesting story: metaverse-linked NFT sales rose 27% in August 2025 — the second consecutive month of heightened activity — with 13,927 sales generating US$6.5 million in volume, per DappRadar analyst Sara Gherghelas.
Small numbers, real signal
Six-and-a-half million dollars is modest against 2021’s frenzy. But two consecutive months of growth suggests users are “slowly sneaking back into virtual worlds” — DappRadar’s phrasing — concentrated in the surviving platforms: The Sandbox, Mocaverse, Otherside and Decentraland.
What the survivors are building
The pattern across 2025 is infrastructure over hype:
- The Sandbox (Animoca Brands) ran its largest LAND auction to date in July 2025.
- Otherside (Yuga Labs) shipped AI-powered world-building tools in August 2025.
- Decentraland announced a major engine upgrade and hosted Metaverse Fashion Week in April 2025.
- Mocaverse is preparing its own Moca Chain, with testnet expected this year.
- HYTOPIA replaced its TOPIA token with HYBUX and expanded its creator fund.
The honest read
The speculative land-grab era is over; what’s left is a smaller market focused on creator tools, identity and infrastructure. For collectors, that means virtual-world NFTs now trade on utility and community rather than scarcity theatre — a healthier, if less headline-friendly, market.
